When cultivating wood outside, pay special attention to the graft and change of the color of the terrace boards due to weather conditions. The information relates to woodworking located at the Earth's surface:
And. Wooden surfaces can be used in the case of:
- Solid wood,
- Very high quality wood (without falling knots, cracks and wood white),
- The use of the inheritance (perfectly horizontal surfaces are unacceptable),
- Lack of contact with the ground,
- Appropriate ventilation (internal and outer side also secured),
- Protecting the surface with anti-uv agents containing UV rays,
II. Wooden structure with a hydrophobic surface obtained thanks to the use of oil based on linseed oil (varnish).
- At least two layers of oil should be used,
- Use of a wood care agent that does not give it a gloss,
- The terrace surface is graying as a result of water and UV radiation (just look at the deck of mahogany sailing ships).
Wooden surfaces
The wood surface is caused by the variable effects of weather conditions, water and ultraviolet radiation. Causes of wood graying.
Water.
- The water comes from the outside, entering the wood because of the too breathable layer of oil.
- The layer is too breathable due to too much concentration of fillers,
- The layer is too thin because:
- The oil is too sticky
- The oil is too diluted,
- The oil is unevenly applied by, what some parts of the board are less water resistant,
- The oil is too saved,
- The oil was grinded with too much force,
- The wood was too short,
- Inadequate design, lack of air circulation, moist wood, not drying
- The oil layer is too thick by, which is too soft, atmospheric factors cause the formation of cavities.
- Water penetrates the oil layer as a result of:
- Cracks in the cover,
- Wood cracks,
- Holes in the shell,
- Water gets into the wood from the bottom of the terrace as a result of:
- No ventilation,
- Contact with the ground,
- Improper construction.
- UV radiation changes the color of the wood, but not leading to its graying.
Example: not pigmented, cared for sailboats, it is not even susceptible to the smallest water. In the case of terrace boards, this situation is unfortunately impossible.
- The operation of UV radiation can only be stopped in the case of full coverage with opaque paint (e.g. white paint), or azure with special UV protection. The permeability of UV rays is inversely proportional to the square thickness of the coating. For example: two layers with a permeability of 10%, it gives 10% x 10% = 1%!
In practice:
Only wood agents forming a protective coating on it are able to protect them from sunlight. There is no wooden agent to prevent water absorption and at the same time forming a sufficiently thick layer on its surface. Oil for wood is not a lazure that forms a thick wood coating. Placing boards is therefore inevitable in the case of terraces.
The location of a layer of white paint (pure theory), in order to avoid UV radiation problems, will cause water vapor and this formation on the surface of the follicle board, which in the future will lead to cracking of varnish.
So, you have to accept wood graying and oil it at least once a year.
